Shanghai Education Press Building is a 60-meter-high office building, which is sited adjacent to a viaduct. Given the fact that it is difficult to look up at the building from the ground, the office building is landscaped to be an urban view seeing fromviaduct.
Within a modest site area, the office building has to be a tower. The facade was designed into two parts, half black and half white, to weaken the sense of dimension. The white part is slightly lifted over the black part, highlighting the fact thatthere is two thinner and higher towers standing there.
2006, Wutopia Lab was commissioned to design an office building for different departments from Shanghai Education Press Company to work together. However, due to a series of resulting changes, including regulatory indicators modification, property lines changing, client in charge alteration, the office building was not finished until 2015.
It’s design inspiration came from the design thread called antithesis, comprised of a series pair of things, black and white, up and down, even and differ, empty and full, Shanghai Education Press Building and the Art Deco style office buildingnearby.
Eventually, Shanghai Education Press Building and the 9-year-long construction made the last pair of antithesis.
