BOMMA, the Czech producer of design lighting, introduces the new MUSSELS Collection. Designed by Václav Mlynář, BOMMA Art Director, this new collection showcases elegance, variability and an organic aesthetic.
Imagine sparkling water hiding fascinating, incredibly detailed mussels. This idea inspired designer Václav Mlynář, BOMMA Art Director, to create a new collection. As he said, “Shells, and particularly mussels, always fascinated me with their simple, yet sophisticated, shape. Each is an original but together they form interesting compositions. They carry a sense of elegance and organic nature, as well as a bit of mystery.”
Two crystal shells surround a light source nested in a precise mounting within either glossy anthracite or brushed gold tones. The glass shell carries a rippling patterned imprint. When lit, it creates the effect of light reflecting from a water surface. Its inspiration in organic shapes, natural colors and the natural environment is apparent at first glance.
Its original design and variability, as well as perfect technical and craft execution of the collection creates a unique object that will rightly be the centerpiece of any interior, drawing attention to its elegance. The birth of mussels in their natural environment takes time, as the new MUSSELS Collection took time to form, before the BOMMA design delivered it to its final completion.
The collection includes individual glass components shaped like shells that form a vertical group composed of six, twelve, or eighteen light units, clustered together to evoke how mussels appear in their natural environment. These individual components may also be installed separately, but through their grouping dramatic lighting installations are possible with dozens or even hundreds of pieces. These lighted constellations become a focal point, a jewel in any interior.
Just as with living mussels in nature, BOMMA’s glass MUSSELS are slightly open, with two degrees of openness available. Mlynář explained, “We aimed for the most natural looking shapes and colors possible. You can combine the colors of MUSSELS as you wish. Among them are clear, smoky, alabaster, and a dark pearl color clearly associated with the natural black of mussels.” Modern technological processes, in combination with our craft traditions, enable the BOMMA glassworks to create a perfect synergy between the designed esthetic and final technical production.
Photographs of this new collection were taken in the spaces of Kunsthalle Praha. Aneta Hoffmannová, BOMMA Marketing Director, said “We were looking for an inspiring space, with the clean modern architecture that provides flexibility, as well as the ability to highlight our new collection. The photography completes our last series of photography that were premiered in architecturally significant buildings within the Czech Republic.”
