This project in Drunen (the Netherlands) shows that even village centres can be developed in such a way as to save on land use. Along with housing company Woonveste and the municipality of Heusden, KOW Architectuur has designed a project encompassing 98 privately owned and rented units and 198 parking spaces on 1.2 hectares of land.

Different types of accommodation were designed to supply affordable housing for a wide variety of occupants in this beautiful location. With its unusual design and cosy proportions, this mixed housing project is a really pleasant place to live.

The buildings follow the curves of the plot and the project design incorporates a car-free central area. Two green courtyards have also been designed to enable both residents and local shoppers to park their cars. The architecture is in perfect harmony with the ‘rural atmosphere’ of Drunen. The pitched zinc roofs on most of the buildings ensure that the one-family houses have plenty of attic space, and add space for maisonette flats with a view of the Drunen Dunes. The underlying concept is unity in diversity. The façades have been designed with maximum attention to detail. The window frames are vertical and as large as possible. The glass used is AGC’s Thermobel Top N+ double glazing. The complex incorporates around 2,200 m² of insulating glazing, in some cases associated with Pyrobelite fire-resistant glass.
