More than other building types, school facilities have a profound impact on their occupants and the functions of the building, namely teaching and learning. Witty International School at Malad, Mumbai, has been designed considering all the factors that directly or indirectly have an impact on its users. Considering Mumbai city’s current high rise culture, the school has been designed as a vertical institute with separate every floor having an open air classroom. Separate bay of lifts cater to people going up and down making the transition between floors smoother. Witty International school offers a learning environment that is spatially reassuring thereby being able to engage the students actively. The school building is spread over 10 floors with playground within its campus and a recreational garden adjoining the campus. The façade of this international school in Mumbai is a ventilated ceramic louver system, which protects the interiors while diffusing sun rays. The interiors have been designed to enhance the learning process. An organic, covered pathway leads to the main entrance of the school. The quality of spatial planning is enhanced by the Attention to Detail in use of materials, textures & colours and also firm control on quality of light in every area. Sensitivity in placing activities at apt locations and maintenance of visual connectivity throughout, give the school its individual institutional identity.
