Wine Bar

FMS architetti as Architects

The wine bar is on the ground floor of an ancient building in the old town of Como. As the exterior is supposed to keep unchanged, the project takes the shape of an interior design plan. So the main points are the layout and the design of equipment and furniture.

The business includes both the tasting and the selling. Consequently the centre of interest is not the table-service, but the wine that is offered in a wide selection of types and brands. That is why we decided to place the display unit against the wall in front of the entrance, in full view from the outside through the existing glass door. On one hand there is the counter and on the other there is the ancient arch which separates the first hall from the second one, where the tables are located. This way the areas for the staff and the customers are kept apart and can be entered from the counter and the inner room respectively.

According to the layout, the main room is arranged uniformly. The same way as the display unit has a red resin frame and clear maple veneered shelves, the counter has the same finishes, but in negative effect: a cantilevered red resin work surface and a clear maple veneered frame. The back counter area and the other walls are kept white, except for the back wall of the inner room. Here a resin custom painting ideally opens a window onto a related landscape. In order to increase the effect of estrangement, the wall is washed from below with a continuous shaft of light coming out of the led lamps built in the back of the bench. The range of colours is complemented by the grey of the parquet, which is laid in a running bond pattern. The colour contrast brings out the warm tones of the yellow and red, the dominant colours of the composition.
