Wagner College – Foundation Hall

Wagner College

H2L2 as Architects

H2L2 recently designed the first new residence hall in over twenty years for Wagner College. The 72,000 s.f. facility is four stories tall, and is located on the western edge of main campus, creating a new outdoor space. The residence hall is designed with both apartment style and suite style units with beds for 208 students. Floor lounges at the end of each residential corridor help foster a sense of neighborhoods, while a large central lounge provides gathering space for the entire residence hall. Additionally, a café area on the first floor provides casual interaction for students. A large and well appointed room on the ground floor, the Manzulli Boardroom, allows the college to schedule meetings, conferences and classes for the building’s residents and the entire college community.

Designed primarily for juniors and seniors, the facility has proven so poplar that students must meet rigorous admissions criteria. The combination of suites and apartments, social areas and study areas, and large conference component within the building creates a stepping stone for students as they prepare for life outside of the traditional classroom and campus setting - a true living/learning environment.

The building is designed to provide individual student privacy while at the same time to promote community and socialization. The following details explain the functionality as well as the sociology of the new facility:

Suites Two bedroom/(4) student suites are the predominant unit type. Within these suites, a communal space outside the bedrooms allows for multi-point bathroom access and also contains a separate counter/cabinet area for an under counter refrigerator and countertop microwave for late-night snacks.

Apartments Two bedroom/(4) student apartments are also available to provide a higher degree of accommodation and autonomy. Designed similarly to the suites with a compartmentalized bathroom area, there is also a separate living room area with seating and study space for the occupants outside of the bedrooms. Additionally, a kitchen counter/cabinet area provides space for a sink, refrigerator, and microwave oven, allowing students to prepare a simple meal.

Lounges The building is divided not only by floor, but also into two separate wings or “neighborhoods”. Within each neighborhood, a separate Resident Advisor room provides monitoring for the floor. A social lounge at the end of the corridor provides a common area for students to gather and interact outside of the suite or apartment. These spaces are vital community building components that allow students to interact and engage in a larger social group. Floor to ceiling glass windows in these lounge provide a literal “window onto campus” that make the spaces engaging and inviting.

Amenities The building provides students with convenient laundry facilities within each neighborhood wing, immediately adjacent to the floor lounges. Study lounges are located on each floor that allow for acoustically separate study space for students, either in individual or group setting. The first floor includes a Starbucks café area with seating and snacks offered into the late night. Security card access as well as a 24-hour manned security desk provides a secure environment for the students.
