Villa Arkö

Marge Arkitekter AB as Interior Architects

Villa Arkö is a summer house situated on an island in the archipelago of Norrköping that will also have the possibility to house the family over Christmas and fall vacations. A steep slant towards south east with a marvelous view is the benchmark for the placement and the form of the villa. The house contains of an archetypical basic shape with a high-pitched roof completely covered in cedar wood which over time will get a silver grey color and interact with the surrounding cliff landscape. A glassed lower volume with sedum roofing and terraces is added on and is thereby creating a building which is following the decrease of the slant. The in-between spaces of the volumes creates out-door spaces in different cardinal directions, on different levels, with and without roofs. Sliding sun shields (with inbuilt mosquito net for the bed rooms) can cover in and protect the house from weather and wind.

The villa programmed to maximize the view with a social first floor and a more private second floor. The first floor consists of two levels with bath room, guest room and kitchen on the higher level and two steps down one will find the spacious lounge room with the modern glass veranda with a panoramic view. The views from the second floor reach only ocean, cliffs and the green sedum roof. The second floor contains of two bed rooms, a bath room and a living room with full room height up to the ridge. A loft with a roof window is places above the bathroom. The volume of the building contributes with a pleasant indoor climate in the summer and after a hot summer day the roof windows can be opened up to air out the building.

The materials are carefully selected to give a sustainable and tolerant house with minimal maintenance. Facades in untreated cedar wood, terraces in heat-treated ash wood, metal details in zinc. The interior wise the building contains of oak floors and furnishing and the walls are painted in a light grey shade.
