The Van Buchem House is originally designed by Architect Jaap Bakema in 1962. Today the villa is a Rotterdam municipal monument. The current owners asked for the addition of extra space which is solved by creating an underground extension underneath the existing patio. The expansion includes a library, a games room and an additional bathroom. By creating the glass skylights the spaces below ground level bathe in the daylight from above. The house itself has been renovated and restored following its original principles.
