UNO Charter Schools - High School

The new high school completes the ascension that was generated by the upward growth of the recently completed elementary school. The building design maintains a similar language, albeit unique, that was set in place by the elementary school by defining facades and apertures directed towards downtown Chicago and the future Soccer Academy to encourage, motivate, and inspire the students. The high school design engages the elementary school, creating a large public square. With the high school as a backdrop, this “Zócalo” space is a large gathering space were community and school events can be held at the center, much like the famous square located in the heart of Mexico City, Mexico. Locating this plaza centrally between the two schools and the adjacent community, celebrates and exemplifies UNO’s integration and engagement with the Gage Park community. Emerging from the high school, into the aforementioned plaza, is a sculpted amphitheater viewing back towards the elementary school and the Zócalo. The dialogue between the two schools is the first of the master plan and becomes a catalyst for further growth in Gage Park.
