In Istanbul construction has just finished on the new head office of fashion center Vakko and media center Power Media. Both the design and the construction of this exceptional project were in the hands of REX. The building was created by reusing the concrete skeleton of an unfinished hotel.
The integration of the existing skeleton was complicated. REX had previously worked on a similar project in California which was cancelled. They adapted the plans and ideas from this similar project to the plans of the unfinished hotel.
This accelerated the construction time as well as the dividing the property into two components. The outer skeleton, converted into The Ring, houses offices. The centre of the building, The Showcase, includes an auditorium and meeting rooms.
Even before the design was finished, REX developed a series of steel ‘boxes’, differing in size, which could be assembled in various configurations. The final stacking of the boxes was determined by the code restrictions, the space use requirements and a spiraling circulation path.
As a result, construction took only a year.
According to REX, the clumsy structure of the hotel was impossible to hide given the project’s compressed time schedule. The architects therefore decided to do the exact opposite: the glass façade of The Ring elegantly reveals the structure. The glass panels were each strengthened by an X-shaped structure, eliminating the need for perimeter mullion.
The Showcase is clad in mirror-glass.
