This facility will house the Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases, the Department of Neurology, and the Keck Foundation Center for Integrative Neuroscience. Bringing together these three UCSF departments, the building is designed to encourage collaboration among investigators working in clinical, translation and basic research focused on the development of treatments and cures for diseases of the nervous system.

The open-air atrium provides visual connections throughout the building. The atrium's use of natural ventilation and daylighting support overall energy savings. The building program includes wet and dry bench laboratories (BSL2 and BSL3), a vivarium (barrier and non-barrier), clinical research areas, an imaging center, staff offices, meeting rooms and an auditorium.

The project is designed to meet LEED Silver certification (without any points for site—the extent of the project is defined as the building footprint only) and is a Labs 21 benchmark.
