The Tree is Hoofddorp’s new shelter for single parent families. Up to 30 homeless families can be housed for up to 9 months in a caring and protected environment. The Tree is a compact and efficient building comprising flexible living quarters and 400m2 of supporting functions. Special attention is given to the aspects of privacy, safety, self-sufficiency and social interaction. The Tree is focused on the 150 year old beech tree which stands on the site as a witness of history and as a protector for the future.
This sustainable building is a concrete/calcium silicate construction with a natural slate on timber framing facade. A highly efficient 'co-making' building and production process, making use of items such as pre-fab bathroom units, resulted in a with a construction period of only 8 months.
