House extension in Malakoff, France

CROIXMARIEBOURDON ARCHITECTURES as Architects

In Malakoff, just outside Paris, CROIXMARIEBOURDON ARCHITECTURES has carried out a vertical and lateral extension project to a late 19th century town house. The new house makes the maximum use of the narrowness of the plot, adopting a light, airy layout that emphasises visual space. The house is arranged on four levels, of 35 m2 each. From an architectural point of view, the larch board cladding of the envelope offers a dynamic outline, giving a continuity between the gable ends and facade. The construction takes a contextual approach to a diverse neighbourhood. It opts for a sophisticated and timeless facade that combines careful craftsmanship with simple materials. With its single, north-east facing frontage, the original house had little benefit of sunlight. This major constraint drove the quest for a radiating form that would optimise both the facade and the party walls. The roof reaches southward, providing openings that introduce sunlight into the studio and the lower levels via generously dimensioned floor openings. On the ground floor, the kitchen/dining room opens onto the new garden with no change of level. The two intermediate floors each contain two bedrooms, with ensuite facilities created from the space previously taken up by a light well. In the roof space, a studio/living room brings family activities together in a large, high-ceilinged space bathed in daylight.
