Streamside at the Valley Club

Vandeventer + Carlander Architects as Architects

Streamside is the name given to a new fifteen home development near Sun Valley, Idaho. Our client has purchased an undeveloped parcel at the Valley Club. His vision is to develop 2,500 square foot one-story homes with attached 600 square foot garages. The houses will be grouped around a central natural space featuring ponds and meandering streams. The building sites were defined during an earlier platting process; each home must to be located within a platted 99 foot diameter circle.

The prototype house design is a simple 60 foot by 40 foot rectangular form. The house plan is bisected along its long axis by a "feature wall". This wall clearly defines public from private space. It is a continuous element extending from the entry courtyard through to the terrace at the opposite end of the house. The home, raised sixteen inches above surrounding grade, is grounded by a concrete plinth.

Upon arriving at the guest parking area, one first enters into the entry courtyard. This semi-private space creates a private outdoor area secluded from neighboring properties. This walled exterior space serves as a transition space from exterior to interior.

Entering the house through a short entry hall, one enters the Great Room - one, large open space. On two sides are floor to ceiling windows; a 16 foot lift-and-slide door system leads to a surrounding terrace. At one end of the room is a comprehensively equipped kitchen with adjacent large pantry. Nearby, a projecting bay, glazed on three sides, provides space for an informal dining table. A door in the bay gives access to the barbecue outside. The dining and living areas occupy the remaining space. A large wood burning fireplace anchors the end of the living room. With the large expanse of windows and doors, one is never out of view of the surrounding mountains and natural light.

The master suite is immediately adjacent to the living space. The suite features a large bath and separate dressing area. The master bedroom opens onto a private terrace. Two additional bedrooms with private baths are found off the entry hall.

A large hip roof with four foot overhangs provides covered areas on the terrace and shade during the summer months.
