The Staircase Study House is one in a series of my public functional art installations that are designed to encourage people to gather together and exercise. In this case, visitors exercise by climbing up and down the four staircases that surround the structure. At the top of the structure, there is a wire mesh enclosed symbolic frame of a house, through which people can pass to enter or exit any of the four staircases.
Each of the four doorways into the framed house is equipped with a chinning bar, mounted near the top.
Under the house and staircases there are four seats built into the four columns that support entire structure. Most of the Staircase Study House is made of painted steel, with wood used on all of the steps, landings, and seats. The structure is 25 feet tall, and 55 feet square.
