Reinterpretation of the Nordic pitched roof The architectural design of Spiloppen is a contemporary interpretation of the existing building’s remarkable pitched roofs, with integrated sustainable solutions. The new addition with its asymmetric rooftops and fan-shaped plan brings a modern and contemporary look to the entire facility, improving simultaneously the architecture, the functionality and the organization of the building.

Architectural design The renovation respects the current architecture, with a high degree of recycling of the structurally sound existing shell. The extension adapts to the site and the existing building, and adds a new and exciting configuration.

Spiloppen obviously demonstrates its sustainability. This is an important pedagogical point for both children and adults. There is something very instructive of being able to see that the building clearly defends the environment. Solar panels are embedded in glass boxes on the south facade, like a solar forest which casts an exciting and playful shadow pattern on the floor. This is sustainability and play united. And during the day, children will experience how the artificial lighting automatically turns off when the daylight is strong enough.

Low energy design Spiloppen is characterized by very low energy consumption via a clear sustainable strategy. The renovation meets the requirements for energy class 2, which is achieved by the following elements:

- Windows and doors in low-energy class - Effective daylight control - 20 m2 of solar panels - Effective artificial lighting with high efficiency - Insulation including in the attic area - Ventilation units with high efficiency, in both the new and existing building.

The extension meets the requirements for energy class 1, which is achieved by:

- Optimization of the extension for solar orientation - The compact body of the building - 35 m2 of solar panels – The balcony on the south façade creates solar protection for visitors passing beneath. In addition, natural ventilation, water-saving taps and toilets and prefabrication are used throughout the building.

Pedagogical program: Spiloppen offers security to each group, and for every individual child, whilst maintaining a dense contact with shared facilities. The physical barriers between the inside and the outside are dissolved. The goal is to create a flexible, varied everyday life for children and adults in terms of qualities such as exterior/interior, up/down, light/shadow, high/low, large/small and quiet/active. Artistic decoration is integrated into the building in the form of acoustic insulation panels in the common areas.
