The South Melbourne House is a new two bedroom home situated on a narrow infill site in one of Melbourne’s most historic suburbs. With window locations restricted to the front and rear elevations of the house, on the first level a glass floor is used to permit natural light to penetrate down to the ground floor from a glazed skylight above.
The interior design is grounded and centred by an American oak-clad service and stairwell core which makes provision for a water closet and further storage space behind secret flush timber paneldoors.
Living and dining rooms are located on the ground floor, with two bedrooms and their respective ensuites comprising the first floor. A third level offers a light-filled study connected to a rooftop deck which provides passive solar access in Winter and aids in the capture of breezes during Summer, expelling any unwanted heat through a process of natural convection.
