Sixth Form Centre for St Leonards-Mayfield School

Pitman Tozer Architects as Architects

Pitman Tozer Architects has converted a boarding house into a new Sixth Form Centre for St Leonards-Mayfield School in East Sussex. The former dormitory accommodation in the Grade 1 Listed building has been reconfigured and refurbished into a state-of-the-art modern working space whilst being sensitive to the historic fabric of the school.

Pitman Tozer Architectsʼ design clarifies circulation through what had been a former conventʼs maze of corridors with small, low ceilinged dark rooms; opening up the interiors to create bright classrooms and introducing a freestanding contemporary stair. A new entrance space reveals and showcases previously hidden stained glass windows to the neighbouring cloister, creating a new focal point where traditional stonework melds seamlessly into a contemporary space, reinvigorating the historically important building.

New classrooms and lecture rooms have been designed with sophisticated IT provision, and all students now have their own dedicated study spaces that are light and airy. Well-designed versatile social areas foster a greater sense of community, allowing students to mix and socialise in comfort and with impressive views of the Sussex countryside.
