Simple and sober, but eye-catching and representative building for research and education purposes, used by the Simona International Institute for Simulation, Motion and Navigation Technology of the Delft University of Technology. The building consists of a ground floor containing the entrance, offices and class rooms and a research hall with more than double height on the second floor. Herein, a flight simulator and a separate volume with facilities and control rooms are accommodated. Because of the enormous kinetic forces that come into being while the flight simulator is working, the machine has been provided with an underpinning which is completely separate from that of the rest of the building. The Simona Institute has a front façade entirely made of glass. Consequently, on the inside there hardly seems to be a borderline between the interior and exterior. On the outside, a fascinating play of transparency and reflection arises. This becomes even more intense when the flight simulator is in action.
