Schools of the Future

Schools of the Future

JMN Arquitetura as Architects

Held in the concrete structure and closure coated masonry, the implementation of these libraries were to contemplate two tipe of public: the schools and the communities where they operate. Schools of the Future are community school libraries in the city of St. Charles that serve both students, faculty and staff of EMEB - Municipal School of Basic Education. The project was proposed in order to enable the construction of several units in a variety of locations. The implementation is defined by the most unfavorable situation of terrain, a rectangle, which therefore has conditioned a rectangular plan. Deployments should be in accordance with the conditions and characteristics of each site in order to both ensure integration of existing neighboring buildings, such as schools and the community. We sought to explore the exterior spaces for reading outdoor activities, games of chess, dominoes checkers, etc. also as a means of attracting the users into the habit of using the library spaces. The building should contain a landmark that would identify any site of its implantation, and thus created the idea of the red monolith in the application of an owl - the symbol of wisdom. The owl was made with pottery shards (reference to Gaudi). The acquis and reading tables are part of the same space, safeguarding to each of these activities suitable and specific brightness of each case. For example, the collection does not receive sunlight directly, but spaces of reading tables allow a nice view of the outdoors. The use of overhead lighting marked by a diagonal coverage as a reference to the “Church of the Light” by Tadao Ando indicates the internal circulation in addition to indirectly illuminate the bibliographic collection.
