San Luis Bicentenarial Park

Mario Schjetnan - Grupo de Diseño Urbano as Landscape Architects

The Bicentennial Park is the first urban project of the new IMMSA Master Plan in San Luis Potosi. It is part of a system of green spaces that will include recreation, bike paths, running paths and water bodies that give structure and order to the new development. The Landscape Structure strategy provides a sustainable future for the new development, ensuring a high quality of life. The project itself is a linear park that works as a buffer between pre-existing industry and the recent housing developments on the west side of a regional road. It is also an important part of a new vision of public urban parks and gardens that include in its design:

• Land rehabilitation, salvaging and transplanting of developed plant material (done in collaboration with specialized scientists). • New plantings with regional native species (promoting irrigation water savings and low maintenance). • Additional water savings through use of a drip irrigation system. • Irrigation water from a treatment plant recently built by IMMSA. • Use of gravels, regional stones and industrial slag as base materials for landscape design. • State-of-the-Art lighting technology based on photovoltaic solar energy and LEDs.

The park features: Running paths, plazas, sitting areas, picnic areas, kiosks, restrooms, shaded areas by tensile structures, an outdoor gym, an amphitheater, high- quality children playgrounds and urban furnishings; security guard posts, maintenance area, treated and potable water tanks; parking for school buses, cars, bicycles and the disabled; display of regional native and xerophytic plants, display of industrial pieces as sculptures, and extensive forested areas with honey mezquites, jellybean tree (palo verde), acacias, guajillo trees, golden mimosas, cypresses, oaks, walnuts, poplars, madras thorn, and many more. The park includes altogheter 1,700 trees. The park will soon be complemented with an extensive tree nursery, with educational programs for schoolchildren.
