Refurbishment of a flat on the María Cubí Str

ARQUITECTURA-G as Architects

The project is based on the premise of preserving the pre-existing pavements and fitting a 3-bedroom apartment in a 70m2 flat located on C / Marià Cubí, Barcelona.

The front façade of the building has a worse orientation than the back one, which on its behalf has a large glazed area. We understand the project as a superposition of performances on a canvas that has been given to us, or a strategy that is based on placing objects that do not reach the ceiling, so that they allow the continuity of light between both facades illuminating all the rooms.

We placed the most public program of the living space in the area with better lighting and the two bedrooms facing the main facade. Introducing an island in the in the open living space the functions of kitchen and furniture for television are resolved and the circulations are organized as well. In front of the island, an oblique wall breaks the grid of the floor and defines the direction of the sofa, as well as the perimeter of a study room that can be transformed into a single room. This study room is provided with natural light thanks to the intensive correlation with the living room, that is realised by a row of foldable shutters, that allows its possible autonomy of the space in the case it´s used as a bedroom. Moreover, the central core of the house, which acts as a buffer zone between the bedrooms and the living area, is occupied by two complete bathrooms. The materials palette is based on the colours of the original hydraulic tile, and also the pattern of 20x20cm of the same one is used to decontextualize by applying it vertically on DM panels lacquered with grooves that draw the same shape.
