Rotterdam is becoming a world city. Many citizens of the world feel right at home on the banks of the river Maas. The controversial construction project The Red Apple, an initiative from Havensteder, symbolizes the international stature of the Netherlands’ only true metropolis. A 120 meter high scarlet tower epitomizes courageous and striking architecture. But also from inside the Red Apple is a special building. The high glass walls allow the person inside to enjoy a 24 hour continous performance by Rotterdam city. With views far across the river or face to face with the tip of the Euromast. The tower is within walking distance of all the good things the city can offer. The Red Apple. Room for the happy view.
Architecture
The location inspired the architects to create such a design. KCAP Architects and Jan des Bouvrie were asked to design the building. KCAP designed the exterior and Jan des Bouvrie the apartments. Both are special designers. The tower has a fiery red, wavy glass and aluminum facade interspersed with French balconies. The wave in the facade is never the same. Special. Transparent. Light. The higher the level, the more open the facade. Perpendicular to the tower is the header block. It looks as if this residential block of the tower is 'bent'. The top block has a magnificent atrium, that the residents can enjoy. Here they can enjoy most of the unique environment and views. The design seems fragile because of the different parts, while still a solid building that can accommodate 231 homes , 3,870 m2 of office space and 1,580 m2 of retail space.
