Rolf Sachs is presenting the ‘rastè’ sculpture at Design Miami/Basel through Gabrielle Ammann // Gallery.
For the ‘rastè’ (‘rake’ in Romansh), Rolf Sachs has taken the traditional wooden rake, found in most Alpine farmhouses, and reinterpreted its simple form in slate.
Masterfully hand carved by a stonemason, the unexpected application of this natural stone strips the object of its original function, liberating it from preconceptions. As a result, this humble everyday utensil, that is so familiar to us, acquires a new sculptural and emotional dimension unheard of in its previous life and unique to each viewer.
Conceptual artist and designer Rolf Sachs is a great scrutiniser of reality; he can find beauty in the simplicity of everyday objects, like a a rake or broom. Sachs enjoys adding the element of nostalgia to their purity and utilitarian form. It is the familiarity of these objects and utensils that encourages human interaction and results in emotional and sensory reactions.
