The erection of these buildings is part of a complete renewal of the Business park called “Stormpolder”. The client (Hollandia, known for Swiss Re & London Eye in London) wanted the buildings to be recognisable from the Brienenoord-bridge. Metropolis architects succeeded in the design of a carefully detailed eyecatcher. The buildings themselfs are very big but next to the even bigger shed designed by Quist they could easily diminish. Therefore the project architects Stefan Pieterse and Gerrit Schilder thought of the principle of optical illusions to make the buildings stand out. Schilder created a pallet of colours in five tailored blue tones of which three are standard and two are special colours of Colorcoat® prefinished steel. The rectangular façade elements of various width and colour are placed between the rigid horizontal lines. From a distance these lines seem to undulate, which is exactly the optical illusion they wanted to create.
