Port and Cruise Service Center

Port and Cruise Service Center

Kubota & Bachmann Architects as Architects

"Balancing economical and environmental interests."

Kaohsiung is the largest industrial harbour centre of Taiwan.

The Kaohsiung Port and Cruise Service Centre is located in the heart of this industrial harbor. It is a place of departure and arrival of national and international passengers. It constitutes the very face of Taiwan and therefore it should reflect Taiwan’s culture at its best.

Taiwan is an island of great nature, home to many bird species.

Our project is composed of a large vegetative carpet and functional program boxes. The idea of the vegetative carpet is to symbolize the natural beauty of the island of Taiwan and to raise public awareness of the urge to protect its environment:

-The form of the vegetative carpet is the result of the dominant north wind and the functional organization of the project. -By creating a micro climate under its surface, the vegetative carpet reduces energy use underneath, meanwhile providing a sustainable approach to a greener harbour. -The colours of the different vegetations are a symbol for the native bird species and Taiwan’s diverse nature.

In essence, the Kaohsiung Port and Cruise Service Centre symbolizes the urgent need of balancing economical and environmental interests globally, as well as locally in the port of Kaohsiung.
