International competion to design the new arts center in Taipei, the project won the 1st honorable mention. The project includes three differently seized theaters dedicated to the performing arts.
Conceptually, we imagined the building similar to a silkworm’s cocoon : a home created around existing structures, letting them exist and grow, becoming at the same time something new. This giant green roof structure is punctured through its skin by the branching nature (like red trees) of different parts of the program. The three performing spaces are imagined as separate red volumes inside the green cocoon structure, these spaces are designed so that each foyer space can overlook the public ground floor space. The cocoon skin is semi transparent and the design allows the interior architecture to visually participate with the exterior city, especially at night when the Center is imagined as a giant kind of lantern.
