The Transparent Paviljoen van de Dame Appears Lakeside

Opened in March 2016, the Paviljoen van de Dame is a sparkling, transparent pavilion located at the Paterswoldsemeer in the Netherlands. Designed by Urban Climate Architects, in collaboration with BiUM Architecture, the pavilion is beautifully integrated into its natural surroundings on the lake and serves as a striking example of modern architecture. Rediscovery of a waterfront tourist destination At the beginning of the 20th century, Paterwoldsemeer was a busy recreation area drawing many local visitors. During this time, numerous pavilions appeared at the edge of the lake. These pavilions offered visitors novel places to eat and drink, while enjoying the view or regatta events. But when locally oriented tourism gave way to more affordable vacations to exotic locations, many of these pavilions fell into disuse and disrepair. Lately however, the shores of the Paterswoldsmere are being rediscovered, most notably with the addition of the thoroughly modern Paviljoen van de Dame. A transparent pavilion set in nature

The Paviljoen van de Dame is located on the site of a now demolished old pavilion that was beyond saving. After seeing the setting and the site’s natural condition, the architects settled upon their vision for a transparent pavilion. The resulting design, covering an area of 1,2000 m2, has a rectangular plan and consists of semi-detached and stacked volumes of different heights, the highest point of the construction being seven meters. Indoor and outdoor connections

The pavilion’s glass facades, fitted with a metal canopies, offer expansive, surround views. From indoors, guests can appreciate views of the water, the clouds and the changing light conditions. In terms of interior fit out, the architects were looking for a complete and unified concept. In particular, they wanted all sanitary fittings to have a clean, modern appearance and come from one brand. Villeroy & Boch was able to offer this with fittings from their Subway 2.0 and Memento collections. Outdoors, connections to nature remain central to the design of the pavilion. The roof of the lowest volume offers a terrace space while at ground level, an expansive wood and concrete terrace that includes a fireplace, gently steps and slopes towards the edge of the water.
