Pavilion to a Private Home

andres carosio architekten ag as Architects

Andres Carosio architects were commissioned with this project as the result of a private competition. The brief was to design a “pavilion” in the garden which could be used as an extension to the client’s neighbouring house for living, dining, office or recreational use. The result was a house that can be used in many ways with a high degree of flexibility. Three sides of the house are a wood clad construction while the southward facing façade has an inclined, all-glass construction which captures the view of the garden. The central service zone acts as a concrete sculptural partition while the double height space along the glass wall further accentuates the spacial generosity. The basement’s rooms and the indoor garage are illuminated via skylights, a light well and a glass brick wall. An underground corridor connects the new building to the main house. The whole pavilion is conceived as a ’promenade architecturale’ in which sequences of light and space are the prominent factors. Although seperately accessible and situated at the end of the plot, the pavilion becomes part of an ensemble by redefining the garden it shares with the existing old house.
