Passive church

FAKRO roof windows in Europe's first passive church

FAKRO as Windows

Church in Równia Szaflarska near Nowy Targ, Poland is the first of its kind in the Europe. Made in technology of passive construction, the church is equipped with energy-saving FAKRO roof windows. The initiator of the energy-efficient solutions in the sacral buildings is parson Jan Karlak. The church was designed by Marcin Stelmach and Tomasz Piszczek from Passive Architecture studio, which specialize in passive constructions. Property through its form refers to the historical style of the region, and by technology means it has become a sign of deep respect for the earth's natural resources for many years. The project of the church, in the general assumption, is extremely energy efficient passive building with minimal energy consumption for heating purposes. The building is the result of combination of local cultural traditions and current trends in the design of architectural structures. The object was shaped in such a way as to minimize heat loss through the divisional structures and maximize solar gains in the cold season, and also to protect the interior from overheating in the summer. The reference point in the search for a design had become a traditional wooden churches, in which the roof, eaves and porches were shaped due to the obvious need to protect the building from excessive effects of wind and precipitation. Widely available technology and materials were used to achieve passive house standard, to ensure long-term operating savings , as well as to obtain a stable and unique aesthetic architectural appeal. The building is designed to be used for a total number of about 500 people and has an area of 1740 sq. meters . All the building divisional structures were designed to achieve 0.1 W/m2K, which became possible thanks to the excellent thermal insulation materials with low thermal conductivity . Heating system of the church was designed basing on low-temperature floor heating with a heat pump powered by deep-water wells. In addition, the building was equipped with mechanical intake and exhaust ventilation with a highly efficient heat recovery of 85% . "Passive church for active believers" is a new quality naturally suited to the needs of modern society. The vision of the twenty-first century church, that believers will identify with.
