Tourist observation tower of stone

Svatopluk Sladecek as Architects

The Chřiby mountain range is the highest and most rugged territory of the Central Moravian Carpathians, stretching almost through the centre of Moravia. They are generally wooded highlands on an area of 335 km2, consisting of two parallel ridges extending from the southwest to the northeast. The highest point of the Chřiby highlands, Brdo (586.7 metres above sea level) is situated in the central part of the northwest ridge. The recently built tourist observation tower is situated on Brdo hill. The observation tower consists of stonework slightly recessing towards the top. The tower narrows in steps as a result of decreasing static load. The shape of the tower is given by the characteristics of the stone and its traditional use without supporting steel structures. Stone – sandstone from the nearby Žlutavy stone quarry. The total height of the observation tower is 23.9 metres. The floor plan consists of an isosceles triangle with rounded corners widening towards the mountain ridge. Entry to the tower is provided by a wooden staircase to the 1st floor. The ground floor serves as service facilities. A wooden oak staircase with large landings and windows providing views of the landscape are found inside the stone tower. A roofed observation platform glazed on all sides is situated on the top of the tower. One half of the glazed surfaces can be opened in suitable weather. The tower has a flat roof with a copper sheet cover.
