L’Obrador de Sabadell

Tarruella Trenchs Studio (Sandra Turruella) as Interior Architects

The latest Obrador in Sabadell gathers the premises of the first shops of this group of bakeries. The Project opens the workroom of the bakery towards the front retail area, and this last space into the Street. The spaces are connected visually to allow customers to see the elaboration process, the phases, ingredients, and the traditional methods which, over time, were no longer shown.

Near the entrance, a continuous concrete counter emerges from the flooring. It provides boldness and serves as a base to place a series of wood volumes in different finishes where the products are displayed.

The display of breads behind the counter plays as the link between production and sales . A wall composed of different rotating wicker baskets, and placed over an iron artifact, is the focus of the space and is the connection between the two.

The shop’s ceiling is made using a bleached fabric, playing at various levels and is inspired in the linens used to ferment the dough before baking the bread loaves.

To make the most of an existing concrete mezzanine, flour sacks are stacked and stored here, as a way to show the quality of the raw materials used in the elaboration of its products.

Other elements that enhance the space and strengthen a new industrial sober image with a casual touch include the iron paneled carpentry, functional wood furnishings, and the white marble used in the bar.

A saw-cut white pinewood wall is also introduced in the shop following the tones used in the ceiling, enhancing the bright spaces and connecting the retail area with the tasting one by a sequence of different levels and ceiling heights.

For the first time in one of these shops, the tasting area is large. The patio at the rear adds natural light and freshness, and invites customers to enjoy this new tasting space with plants, climbers, and furnishings in a French bistro-like color hue.

The copper-treated pine pavement used in the patio is slightly elevated from the interior floor elevation. The pavement elongates itself towards the inside, passing under the exterior carpentry to become a continuous bench for the tables inside the shop. This element, like the pine wall, serves once again to connect the different spaces.
