Nottingham Science Park

Studio Egret West as Architects

The Exemplar Building, also know as No.1 Nottingham Science Park, is the first development to be proposed as Phase 1 of the Nottingham Science Park Extension (masterplanned by Studio Egret West with Hawkins Brown). Completed in the summer of 2008, it is to be closely integrated into the masterplan concept, with paired inflected wings sharing facilities in a central hub and shared external spaces between the wings. The main approach to the building was via a path of giant lily pads that wind their way through a wild flower meadow.

The landscape flows under the building, connecting the main pedestrian approach with the vehicular approach. The building displays its sustainable credentials to attract and support leading edge users. As the "exemplar", the design of the building offers a flexible solution that could be repeated across the site. The user base will be science and technology start up and expanding businesses, principally IT with potential for some lab-based users. The building has a high quality warehouse feel; with allowance for more conventional office finishes where required.

The Exemplar has won a number of industry awards such as: Innovation in Sustainability, Nottingham Science Park (UK Science Park Association 2009); Design excellence, No.1 (Nottingham Evening Post 2009); Sustainable Development of the year (East Midlands Property Awards 2008)
