The urgently required façade renovation of the day care centre, built in 1983 in the process of Housing System 70 (WBS 170), was completed thanks to Stimulus Package II. The underlying principle of the design was to use the allocated funds not only to provide thermal insulation and a new coat for the façade. Economical budgeting and a sophisticated design made oriels for the group rooms possible, which are suspended in front of the insulated façade. Educational space is thus enlarged thanks to these oriels, which clear the view to the green surroundings and are used by children as an additional zone for frolicking, as a sanctuary, but also as a stage, e.g. for puppet theatre performances. As required, the design includes alternative refuges for sparrows, swifts and bats, whose nesting sites in slab joints had to be sealed. Just as the colourful children’s oriels, they structurally punctuate the garden façade.
