New scene living room

New scene living room

OV-A as Architects

We were invited to competition (for) to design a temporary object on a piazzeta of The National theatre. The task was to create a summer scene for outdoor performances and to offer a place to sit and rest to those who pass by. The only material which could be used was yellow plywood desks and prefabricated wooden beams used as a formwork for concrete structures by PERI company. PERI provided this material for free on condition that it could be reused after the the temporary objets would be dismantled. The idea came from the last summer experience, when during the outdoor performances spectators climbed on every possible object as dustbins and flowerpots.

The piazzeta itself is a bit strange space in the center of Prague. It was created during the construction of the New scene of The National theater in 80´s. From three sides it is surrounded by buildings of architect Karel Prager, controversialy perceived by the public even in these days. Fourth side is closed by the historical building of The National theatre from the 19th century.

Finally we found out, that the place of piazzeta gives the impression of a room in the city, a living room that someone forgot to furnish. Because the living room is relatively large, we moved four giant sofas and coffee table inside. Incoming persons, during his trip through the city, finds himself in a overgrown living room, where he can meet not only members of his household.

During the performance, the sofas serve as a terraced auditorium, in the meantime as benches for passersby. Different sizes of sofas are used by different sized groups. During the summer we could see couples or small groups of friends sitting on small sofas with tendencies to stay there all night.
