Project. To a large degree, artistic influence and ability are judged according to the light in which a work is exhibited. When museums and galleries for their part adopt an intelligent approach to implementation and object placement, the overall impression created is harmonious. This is clearly visible at the New Kassel Gallery, which itself can also be seen in a new light since its re-opening in 2011.
Concept/Design. Apart from the need to comply with modern construction regulations, the purpose of the renovation and restoration work was to exploit the qualities and characteristics of the solitary building at the Kassel «Schönen Aussicht». The idea behind this was the possibility of developing contemporary spatial sequences for the envisaged exhibition subjects. The gallery consists of two square gable ends and rectangular center area, while the entrance now takes the form of a multi-storey foyer directly linking all three levels.
Construction. The top floor is now much more attractive with the addition of a modern skylight. The system consists of an adjustable supporting structure, incorporation of custommade, torsion-resistant tenter frames in aluminum, and a two-layer foil and light-technical SEFAR® Architecture Fabric IA-80-CL covering. To ensure the even diffusion of daylight or artificial light in the exhibition area and foyer, the sails are fitted flush with the level of the lower ceiling. Stunningly large individual elements open the space upwards, bathing the exhibits below in natural light from suspended skylight awnings. The light ceiling sails on the top floor are provided with attachment magnets which automatically release in the event of fire so that they open by the force of gravity alone.
