New Court Building in Almendralejo

E. BARDAJÍ AND ASOCIADOS S.L. as Architects

The new Court Building in Badajoz, designed by the Enrique Bardají y Asociados architecture studio, is opened

To mark the recent opening, on 29 April, of the new Court Building in Almendralejo, we are sending you this press pack we have prepared at the E. Bardají y Asociados studio to show you the most important aspects of the building and its features in detail.

The new court building will meet the needs of the three current courts and there is enough space reserved for future growth. More than 30 people will work here, providing service to more than 51,000 members of the public.

Following construction processes based on sustainable models, the design and execution of the building have been developed using crafts and materials from the area, such as granite and cherry wood. The E. Bardají y Asociados architecture studio’s initial idea was always to integrate it into its environment, not only physically but also territorially and socially. The building emerges from the site like the granite mass of an Extremaduran crag, cut as a base for best architecture developed in Extremadura at the height of the conquest of the new world. The access is plowing like the bow of the boat into the sculptural installation “Espuma de mar sobre tierra de barros. Homenaje a Espronceda” (Sea foam on muddy land. Homage to Espronceda), the work of the Sevillian artist Sandra Rein. An olive tree, native to the area, occupies the building’s central courtyard. The glass structure of the façade, seeks transparency and clarity, important symbols of the work of justice.

The building has been created on an irregular geometric plot measuring 5,310.40 m2, with capacity on its four levels to house six courts, four judges’ chambers, the Civil Registry and a wedding room, prosecutor’s office, medical/forensic clinic and other rooms necessary for providing service for all operational needs associated with professionals involved in judicial activity.

With this new Court Building, the Ministry of Justice has provided the Administration with an infrastructure suitable for the needs of the people of the area, who can obtain efficient, quality service close at hand in a representative context.

This is not the only project that the E. Bardají y Asociados studio is carrying out related to the area of justice. Detailed knowledge of the judicial sphere, a sensible view of architecture and proven experience in public buildings underpin the projects it is due to complete over the next few months: the extension to the Ponferrada Court Building (Ministry of Justice) and drawing up the construction plans for the new Lora del Río court building in Seville (Ministry of Justice and Interior of the Government of Andalusia).
