After more than three years of renovation work upon the interior design project by architect Italo Rota, Milan has a new and important museum in the very heart of the city. Situated next to the Milan Cathedral in the impressive Arengario building, just in front of the famous Vittorio Emanuele Gallery, the Museo del Novecento (Museum of the Twentieth Century) hosts an incomparable heritage of Milan’s art collections from the last century, including artworks from the Avantgarde era from the beginning of the XX Century to the current era. Many of the works are shown against the elegant background of walls created with DuPont™ Corian® high-tech surface and including signage explaining each piece of art made with the same material.
Built in 1942, and never completed due to the Second World War, Arengario finally has found a major role in the Milan’s architectural and cultural life. The interiors of the new Museo del Novecento, conceived by Italian architect Italo Rota, open up with a massive spiral pathway leading to the exhibitions of almost four hundred pieces of art that represent some of the major art collections in Milan.
Bright and elegant, the exhibition halls of the Museo del Novecento are characterized by light wood, cream and white finishes, such as much of the wall cladding made with DuPont™ Corian® techno-surface in various light colours. The visual impact of the surfaces in DuPont™ Corian® is enhanced by its seamless appearance which, notwithstanding a height of 5 meters, remains a discrete and beautiful support in the renowned atmosphere of Sala delle Colonne (Hall of Columns).
DuPont™ Corian® techno-surface has also been used for a vast array of visual and schematic displays. Among these include display cases, accented by slim steel columnar supports, descriptive panels, carts pedestals and table tops, including a large table situated in one of the larger halls with a top in DuPont™ Corian®. The light colour scheme of DuPont™ Corian® used for the project deviates only along the corridor connecting the Arengario building to the Palazzo Reale (Royal Palace), which has been covered with a black wall panelling in DuPont™ Corian®.
Being a prestigious material capable of visually enhancing the spaces and art collections, more than 1500 square meters of DuPont™ Corian® have been used for the interiors of the new Museo del Novecento in Milan, DuPont™ Corian® has once more proven its versatility and high-end performance.
