This commission for one of China’s largest residential developers involves the design of a series of tower types that can be used on a number of sites around China. Our family of designs creates a bold external appearance that can be tailored to different contexts, and configured to suit the climates of the north and south of the country.
A modular tower design which will be used across a diverse range of locations carries a strong statement about the developer - and so our approach seeks to create a bold, recognisable image which can also adapt to local conditions and context. Carefully developed to be human-scaled, the design enhances the interior spaces with natural light and views, while utilising recessed windows and generous balconies to prevent excessive solar gain.
The design expresses the various plan layouts on the facade of the towers. The overall form, materials and detailing achieve a simplicity that emphasises the play of solid and void, light and shade to generate a unique sculptural effect. All balconies, windows and air conditioning units are integrated, resulting in a very clean design which expresses each individual apartment.
The corner treatment is critical to the strong form of the tower – the alternation of corner and picture windows on each floor gives a striking visual effect. The configuration, colour and tiling pattern can be varied to suit the context.
