Market of atarazanas

Aranguren & Gallegos Architects as Architects

The project involves rehabilitation and recovery operation of the former Central Market of Atarazanas, as well as an operation of substitution of existing stalls, unable to meet these necessary conditions required today. It is a unique building in iron structure of the late nineteenth century, with commercial space located on the ground floor, at street level, divided into three areas for marketing, respectively, of fruit and vegetables, fish and meat.

The project has aimed to recover the original design of the old Market under Rucoba architect plotting, enhancing its character and architectural monumentality.

The rehabilitation, looking for full respect for the architectural design of the existing building and space, and its objective is to design a formal and spatial organization of the posts to allow the vision of great market space, while provide a overall adequacy of current needs, so as to clarify and enhance the circulation of the user by indoor-outdoor, eliminating architectural barriers.

In order to recover the original building scheme is carried out the demolition of all those later additions allowing regain visual connection of the great axis of Atarazanas´s door and large window, a space on one floor with Market stalls as objects introduced into the large container.

The design of the plane stalls take as a reference the workshop space Donald Judd sculpture, a large industrial structure that houses a sequence of tables on which are deposited sculptural series of basic color boxes. These have been constructed with metal paneled inside with corrugated iron on the outside with a series of basic color boxes. The design aims to create a stall structure develops a chromatic prism sequence to establish a horizontal plane of new construction with contemporary language that is so different, yet dialogue with the historic structure of the market.
