MARÍA MOLINER PUBLIC LIBRARY

Paredes Pedrosa Arquitectos as Architects

It is a very small public library, the smallest library unit envisaged by the Local Government in Madrid.

The site is in Velilla de San Antonio a small town, now growing fastly, in the surroundings of Madrid.

The library occupies mostly the whole lot in a single height. The access is turned towards the Plaza where the entrance is placed defining a public open space in front of this small public building.

A concrete wall surrounds the library completely closed towards the street. Natural light comes into the interior space by means of two great skylights built upon two open patios. These light metal prisms define the areas, one for children and the other one for adults. It is possible to come out to the patios to read. There is a third linear patio that separates the library from the nearby buildings. The rest of the interior area is a continuous space where the different zones of the library are placed, all controlled by one single person placed at the entrance.

The interior plan of the sloped roof of the skylights is covered with panels of natural clear wood in order to give warmth to the interior space.
