This project consists into the transformation of an old dumpy duplex into a single unique contemporary house. From the street, the loyal restoration of this typical Montreal facade hides pretty well what has been going on inside, since it was mainly demolished to rethink the whole space according to it’s new usage. A great black painted block, lodging the facilities, takes place in the middle of the house structuring it on the two floors with its nearby two stories high space. The old spruce pine rafters from the demolition were used to build the stairs and a catwalk that crosses the gap and links all the bedrooms. There’s also a bunch of artifacts found there that were reused and reinterpreted such as metal sheets from the old parapet that became the vanity in the water closet and an original plaster ceiling rosette installed recessed over the dining table. Furthermore taking place in the heart of the house, the kitchen is stretched on the second floor to become an office space on the mezzanine. The living room and the kitchen are extended to the private terrace due to the wide openings. All the three bedrooms are located on the second floor. One of them has a swinging wall that allows light from the south to lighten the central open space depending on the desires of the occupants.
