Mainco maintain railway signals across Melbourne’s metropolitan network. This purpose-made building provides new facilities for the equipment maintenance that in some cases dates the 19th Century.
Situated in the Southern Cross Station precinct, at the foot of the La Trobe Street bridge, the building faces west to the railway tracks and Docklands stadium beyond. Below the building, as shallow as one metre, are the tops of three of the underground rail loop tunnels. The building is conceived as a ground-floor robust industrial shell (where workshops and stores are located) providing a base for a lightweight, transparent, pavillion-like first floor for offices and amenities.
