Loft in Paris

Maxime Jansens architecte as Architects

Housing is an ancient 130sqm craft shop located in eastern Paris, in an old courtyard. Two old patios had been covered by skylights that we had to replace, and had their floor level was higher than the apartment so we had to flatten to the proper level. The inside spaces aremostly lit by these skylights and as a few windows on the outside. For instance, the two children bedrooms have no window directly on the outside that’s why they are closed by glass walls. As they also wished to live in an “open-space” apartment, we tried to add as few partitions as possible. As there was a lot of space for these two bedrooms we were able to put the children bathroom in the bottom, leaving a big free space for working and playing under the skylight.

The clients had a very low budget (we spent less than 900€/sqm), but they didn’t mind to have their furniture with a very raw aspect. Thus we decided to employ materials like concrete, steel and softwood, deliberately left rough to express their own qualities. The floor is high resistance cement patching, with a polyurethane polish protection. Kitchen: All the furniture, included the sink, is made of reinforced concrete protected with a resin coat, and the cupboards are made of pine wood with an oil protection. Glass walls are made of steel welded on site, and treatedwith a product for rifle barrels. The same product was used for the bathroom steel furniture, with a resin protection.

Products : - CEA, for the taps and shower. - Emery&Cie, for the cement tiles - Eiffel, fot the ceramic tiles
