Loft Bourget II

Rayside Labossière as Architects

Built on top of a garage that was converted into a recording studio, this project illustrates the phenomenon of appropriation of spaces by young professionals looking for an urban lifestyle.

The project consisted of creating adaptable and versatile living spaces, reflecting the lifestyle of the occupants. For the young couple looking to start a family, some of the spaces can even change functions over time to accommodate new members of the family.

As it was built above a recording studio, soundproofing was an important aspect of the project. In order to preserve the integrity and independence of the roof of the recording studio, a platform was created in the loft. This platform serves as a base for the kitchen and bathroom bloc, visually dividing these functions from the other day functions.

Thanks to the large area available, the spaces are vast and airy. The spatial organization was planned to allow for fluidity between functions, and thus all superfluous partitions were eliminated. The South-West fenestration opens up on a view of the Downtown, letting in a bright and energizing lighting, which is much appreciated during the cold winter months.

Bathroom

The project consisted of creating 2 personalized bathrooms that reflect the lifestyle of the occupants, a young couple looking to start a family.

In the family loft, two full bathrooms were designed, one more feminine on the upper level, and one more masculine on the lower level, in order for the man of the house to be able to get ready in the wee hours of morning without waking his better half.

These small considerations can have a large impact on day-to-day life and were not treated as passing fancies.

The materiality plays an important role in the atmosphere and identity of the newly designed spaces. Natural yet noble materials were selected. Natural to highlight the once-industrial vocation of the site, and noble to create a welcoming and timeless space. Wood, marble, stainless steel and glass are interspersed throughout the spaces and surfaces. The lighting also contributes to the ambiance of the space.

Kitchen

Built above a recording studio, soundproofing became an important aspect in the design of the kitchen. In order to preserve the integrity of the existing roof, a platform was created below the kitchen, hiding the plumbing systems.

A large central island with a marble surface allows the couple to let their imagination run wild while concocting multiple recipes fueling their love for good food. Stools line the edge of this volume to allow for guests to partake in the cooks’ performance.

A living wall will create a vertical element in the kitchen, and serve to cultivate herbs. It will stretch from the main floor to the mezzanine to provide a link between the levels and take advantage of the South-Western lighting.
