Langara College Bldg C Renovations & New LSU Student Centre

Teeple Architects as Architects

The design and construction of the new LSU Student Centre and complete renovation of the former Library Building into the new Academic Building C at Langara College marks the second phase in an ongoing transformation of the college into a Sustainable campus, as prescribed in the Master Plan completed by Teeple Architects in 2005. Having completed the new Library in 2007, Teeple Architects are now focusing their efforts on these two new projects that like the Library, will achieve LEED Gold certification. In the new projects, a unique Direct Energy Transfer system stores energy and moves it throughout the buildings to areas where it is required for heating and cooling, making the completed buildings amongst the most energy efficient buildings in the country.

Building C has been redesigned as a flexible Academic facility, featuring classrooms, student support centres and staff offices, all supported by contemporary educational information technology systems. A complete voluntary Seismic upgrade of this building will significantly extend the lifespan of this building while improving staff and student safety. As the tallest building on the Langara campus, it will be transformed into an exciting new icon of the College’s sustainable philosophies, evident in the new high performance cladding and window systems that will be visible from all vantage points on the campus and in the greater Langara community.

The new LSU Student Centre will be a dynamic, curving structure providing a ramped link between the north side of the campus and the new Central Quad space that was completed with the Library in 2007. This building will animate the Central Quad with both its form and the large expanses of windows providing views in and out of the redesigned Lounge & Restaurant spaces. Along with new, larger Student Centres and staff facilities, this building offers students multiple indoor and outdoor study and recreational spaces.
