Landspitali is the new university hospital of Reykjavik where existing functions and buildings are connected in a new and united complex.

Henning Larsen Architects participated in the competition for this project in a large team of hospital specialists, engineers and local architects. The competition proposal emphasised the importance of achieving the very best combination of facilities for human care, a healthy working environment and efficient treatment.

In the company’s proposal, all the new hospital functions are placed adjacent to the existing hospital buildings. Here, a large number of the teaching functions are concentrated in order to achieve a vibrant environment where treatment, teaching and research are continuously challenged and developed. The old main building is emphasised as the centre of activity by means of gardens and a luxuriant atrium.

The ward for hospitalised patients is situated at the top floors of the building with a view of the fantastic Icelandic scenery while the entrance for outpatients goes through a large, interior street that meets an indoor courtyard. The research and study departments are also situated at this floor thereby contributing to create an inspiring hospital environment with the best basis for knowledge sharing between the research departments and the treatment wards.
