Lab LZ by GT - Casa Cor Rio 2015

Gisele Taranto Arquitetura as Architects

The Event - CASA COR Casa Cor Rio is completing 25 years and to celebrate this success, the event will take place at Villa Aymoré. Listed by county and included in the protected area of the Cultural Environment (APAC) of Glory and Catete since 2005, the Villa Aymoré is finalizing its restoration to host a commercial venture. Built between 1908 and 1910, the set of ten houses is a true work of art that helps tell, through its buildings, part of the history of the City of Rio de Janeiro and Brazil.

In this event the best and most famous architects and designers design their spaces, like a fashion show, using a lot of creativity and seeking to present to the public the biggest releases of materials, technologies and design concepts.

The Concept - LAB In 2015, Gisele Taranto Architecture has partnered with LZ Studio to create a laboratory of ideas - LAB LZ by GT. The intent of this lab is to get people out of their comfort zone and spur them to think and participate in our "experiences".

As in any process of creating, the questioning is necessary. The idea is that this LAB is a place to hold meetings and talks with various areas of professionals. Participants may be actual or virtual and may be in Brazil or other countries.

A construction method usually has several layers of coatings and this LAB design has the purpose to freeze the retaining walls and ceiling unfinished to show that there will have layers of different thoughts. We want to bring up discussions about solutions and thoughts in different areas that directly or indirectly influence and / or will influence the way we inhabit and live, and what future we should expect or in fact is already reality.

Considering that 25 years ago the movie "Back to the Future" imagined a world in 2015 with cars and flying skateboards, we found that this reality is still far from being achieved. Similarly, if we analyze the cartoon series "The Jetsons," originally shown between 1962 and 1963, we see a family that lived in 2062 with a major technological breakthrough, with flying cars, suspended cities, robots as servants, and everything that goes to imagine the future. Even this date still being too distant and some aspects of the design have already become reality, will wedwell in cities suspended? Is it just a financial or bureaucratic issue that hinders us? Or doesn’t the society really crave this way?

As Marina Abramovich invites her viewers to participate in her method, we want to offer a trip to new ways and ideas. This space is not static; we want the visitor totry it. QR codes are placed on the walls, in order to help visitors with this connection.

Our videos show researches and projects from Brazilian and foreigner Universities, as well as detailed explanations from the artists themselves, regarding the art pieces displayed in the space.

From COPPE/UFRJ, project like “Maglev-Cobra” – a magnetic levitation train -; Pecém’s Wave Energy Plant; the Blue Project; and the researches on the second generation biofuels, among others.

The Piet Zwart Institute, from the Netherlands, will show the Next habitat project, which was in this year’s Milan Design Week, in Ventura-Lambrate.

Students from PUC-Rio, on the other hand, will be developing a research with Casa Cor visitors during the event. They will be working on a project that somehow meets the design expectations for the future. By the end of the event, an award ceremony will take place, and the projects will be shown in our TVs.

The project - LAB LZ by GT As part of a globalized world, we want to use furniture and objects from well-known national and international designers, to handle high-end technology in the experiments, to take advantage of sustainable, elegant and creative lighting, and to create synergy through art pieces that could somehow merge all channels together.

All the furniture is part of the LZ Studio's collection, contemporary store that, like Gisele Taranto Architecture, is concerned to present and question new concepts and values. Its universe includes famous brands from national and international designers. And for this LAB, we decided to merge these two worlds.

The environment LAB LZ by GT, although fully integrated, presents an area sectorization.

We have a first area of consulting, such as a library, with bookshelves and different benches and chairs, which allow the visitor to look for a specific material exposed in these shelves. All Unisaber books are available to be purchased. There is also a second area, living / lounge with a large asymmetrical sofa, which allows the visitor a break for rest and reflection and also to interact with other visitors. And we have a third area, meeting / working.

Library sector: Joop bookshelves designedby Gisele Taranto Arquitetura, Pebbles ottoman from FlaviaPagotti for Salvatore, Bololo chair, by Leo Capote, and side tables Mix It, from Arik Levy for Desalto.

Living / Lounge sector: Lego leather sofa from Estudio Bolawith decorative cushions with Patricia Urquiola fabrics fromKvadrat, wooden stools Cheese, Pinocchio, Nano and Bricolage from Riva 1920, side tables Mix it Arik Levy for Desalto, side table Bakfrom Jader Almeida, side table Wireframe from PieroLissoni for GlasItalia, as well as two light fixtures by Verner Panton.

Meeting / Working sector: Tev table by Jader Almeida, Bilanx swingfrom Rodrigo Calixto for Oficina Ethos, Meranochairs from Alex Guflerfor Ton, C60 Chair from Carbon Design with Kvadratfabric and Diesel Overdyedchair fromMoroso.

Logic and sound is being conducted by EnDev. The LAB will have a suspended glass floor and mirror shards in the empty space between the existing subfloor and finished floor, provided by TTR Vidros and Guardian. The significance of the mirror comes to complement the concept of what we hope with this work: depth and reflection.

The orchids in display do not exist in nature, they are all hybrids. Roberto Agnes fromAraBotanica, the responsible for this research, shows how the process is carried out, from the seeding process, then to the vessels when they are two years old, until the outcome of the first blooms, when they are four and a half years old.

The color palette used was designed taking into account the novel Iracema, 1865,from José de Alencar - a Brazilian novelist. Iracema is the name of the building in the village where is located the LAB, and that, in the novel, means "honey lips". So in our palette we have the color honey, propolis, wax and annatto.

Orlean is responsible for Harlequin’s English linen curtains, that also possess grayscale and off white layers.

All lighting is made with LED lamps from Brilia. Relumi was responsible for the lighting leaders, designed by ManecoQuinderé.

Vanda Klabin signs the art curatorship. Vik Muniz, Angelo Venosa, Walmor Correa and Rodrigo Calixto exhibit their pieces which have in common the idea of science combined with art. Hybrid beings come to life through the work ofWalmor Correa,an artist that presents a mermaid’s anatomy atlas, as well as her electrocardiogram and a neo-vaginal surgery.Viruses and bacteria become art through the partnership betweenVik Muniz and Tal Danino (MIT bioengineer), and a castle is designed in a grain of sand also through partnership betweenVik Muniz and Marcelo Coelho, another bioengineer from the MIT.Angelo Venosa presents a membranecovering drawings made of plastic filaments with 3D pens.Last but not least, Rodrigo Calixto removes pigment from Brazilian wood species to display in test tubes.
