Looking after a grave is expensive and labor intensive work, relatives often live far away and people are wondering more and more, who will actually take care of their own grave some day.
Given the above, many people instead opt for cremation. Important being that the urn is layed to rest in a dignified setting. It should be a place that exudes tranquility, giving ample room for reflection and commemoration and mourning for the bereaved.
This is precisely what a columbarium offers; serving as a burial place for urn funerals.
For those reasons, the protestant community of Hückeswagen converted the St John's Church in to a columbarium, already back in 2012. 8 urn walls, each housing 20 urn compartments and 12 urn steles, each containing 8 urn compartments made of concrete, were constructed in the church. Two urn walls (or respective Steles) at a time, stand back to back on a gilded pedestal. The backs of each urn chambers are adjustable, allowing to set up urn chambers for the burial of one, two or even three urns.
