Originally this was just another dull, non-functional, walk-out basement in desperate need of design attention and renovation. Within Design knocked out the wall separating the finished and unfinished areas to create a sophisticated and inviting basement. The basement now includes a larger bathroom, home office, family room, games room, fitness area, spare bedroom, mudroom, laundry room, and utility room. Standout features in the design concept include: environmentally responsible finishes like the Vetrazzo recycled glass counters, the Echowood panels, and cork floors; the existing curved staircase inspired a focal point to design a custom built-in bookcase and curved bar area; cast in place custom concrete fireplace surround; natural stone veneer accent walls to add texture and depth; and lastly, a concealed storage unit in the fitness area to contain large items and keep the space looking tidy.
The end result was a stunning basement, with high contrast colors, and sophisticated textures; a real knockout! In addition this renovation was also awarded a Canadian Home Builder's Association SAM Award, winning Basement of the Year 2011.
